NOTES
Minimal, intentional musical phrasing and lyrical paraphrasing bring forth this satisfied, resolute proclamation in a way that I imagine David playing and singing it. I envision the shepherd with a few trusted companions, having shared an evening meal in sight of sheep just moved to new pastures. Alone, he would voice it entirely to God, but companions are among him and so a small audience hears it instead as testimony—remaining quiet, moved by his heart and the skill of soiled hands working his traveling instrument.
Carrie's voice, as always for this song, brings wider emotion and together we hope to convey David's singular passion and its basis in truth. The acoustic guitar voices satisfaction and peace in the present, swelling occasionally with joy and praise. The fretless bass calls to the depth from which that has been borne—through struggle, fear, and loneliness, met by the provision, comfort, and companionship of the Great Shepherd. I chose only a portion of the Psalm for the song here, less even than in "I Will Praise Him Again" (from Psalms 42 & 43), and in total contrast to the full and complete narrative of "Steadfast Love" (from Psalm 107).
